Why space has sound at all
Space is a vacuum, so sound cannot travel through it — what you can hear here is of three kinds: microphones that worked inside a pressurised cabin or on a suit, engineering telemetry converted into audible ranges (“sonification” of plasma waves and magnetic fields), and the acoustic record of launches on Earth. The Apollo crews recorded dust, static and their own breathing; the Voyagers and Cluster missions turned invisible plasma oscillations into pitch.
Hearing Mars
Perseverance carries microphones, and in 2021 humanity heard another planet for the first time: a light wind, a rover’s own motor noise, and the Ingenuity helicopter overhead. Because Mars’ thin CO₂ atmosphere absorbs high frequencies, distant sounds arrive hushed and dull — an actual acoustic signature of a different world.
Using these recordings
NASA imagery and audio are not copyrighted by NASA, so educators, podcasters and video makers may reuse them with attribution. The only usual limits are persona rights (astronaut faces and names in advertising) and “Don’s Dream” style commercial-endorsement rules.
